Vera Baerends is a Master’s student specializing in Medicinal Chemistry at Radboud University, currently completing her graduation internship at BioMed Elements. With a foundation in analytical and medicinal chemistry, Vera brings both scientific rigor and creative insight to her research, which focuses on developing a local and sustained release system for pain medication using biodegradable polymers.

Her curiosity and love for chemistry began in high school and has since evolved through a Bachelor’s degree, a role in Quality Control, and now into her advanced studies.

Vera’s current project—a fundamental research initiative—explores the potential of polymer-based drug delivery, aiming to improve future pain relief options for patients. Though the specifics of her findings remain confidential, her hands-on work in particle preparation and release studies has already produced promising insights.

Known for her inquisitive mindset and passion for innovation, Vera values the supportive and exploratory environment at BioMed, which allows her to approach scientific challenges with creativity and purpose. Outside the lab, she enjoys running, baking with sourdough, and taking care of her lush “jungle” of houseplants—alongside three adorable cats.
